Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN’s) For Applications You Haven’t Imagined Yet
At the Dawn of the Internet Era many process engineers and designers viewed wireless sensors as a great way to save on wiring costs especially in retrofit projects requiring long lengths of wire just to connect one sensor to a SCADA system located on the other end of the plant. Wireless technologies adopted their own standard (ISA100-IEC 62734) back in 2010 and they continue to thrive in the industrial automation market, however if you want to monitor 100’s of more points in the same process then costs can become prohibitive or you are limited by the number of points the PLC or SCADA system can manage – so what’s the solution? Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) to the rescue.
These small and relatively low cost wireless sensors have allowed engineers to develop new applications that would have passed as science fiction back in the 90’s. These spatially distributed autonomous devices allow 100’s upon 100’s of data nodes to connect together over a common mesh network capable of communicating with a primary node (gateway) that provides WiFi, Bluetooth or RF connectivity back to the wired world and other distributed nodes. Many of the newer WSN’s also have computational abilities that allow them to control actuators or perform edge or cloud analytics over time, distance and spatial domains.
On Thursday, September 28 join us for our 1ST Last Thursday of the Month Members Meeting to kick off the new 2017-2018 session. Come learn about the latest in WSN technologies and where it’s headed and enjoy the opportunity to network with others in the profession who may share the same interests as you. Our guest speaker will be Cole MacDonald from Mero Technologies.
Venue: 5400 Dixie Road, Sandman Signature Mississauga Hotel, Huron Room (Main Floor).
Time: Free for ISA Members Dinner beginning from 5:30 pm. Presentation starts at 7:00 pm.
You are welcome to join us to make ISA Toronto Table Top Show 2017 super successful networking Event!

Join us at our Last-Thursday-of-the-Month members meeting and get an overview of how SCADA and other related IP instrumentation are connected to the IT network in a building or plant environment. Learn the need-to-know essentials of what IT hardware is needed to connect process instrumentation to a local or wide area network and what communication protocols are used to access the system locally or remotely.
Presented By: Paul Calinescu, Professor @ George Brown College.
Times: 6 – 7 PM Greet & Eat
7 PM Presentation followed by a Q&A
Presentation: Distributed Computing for Distributed Power Generation
For the past 100 years, the power grid has been a simple “one-way street”. Electric energy is produced at centralized generation stations, transmitted through high-voltage power lines, and distributed to consumers through transformers and substations.
With the emergence of renewable energy, energy storage, and distributed generation, the power grid has become a complex series of interconnected systems. In addition, the need for accurate, real-time data and analytics has become paramount.
We will explore the evolution of the power grid over the last century, and enabling technologies to tackle the challenges of a complex Power grid. How can IoT technologies be applied to the emerging “EnerNet of Things”?
Speaker: Tim Munro, Advantech Corp.
Working in the Industrial Automation industry for the last 25 years with Manufacturers and Distributors of Industrial Automation Technology, Tim has built expertise in Motion Control, PLCs, SCADA systems and networks. He has diplomas in Electrical Engineering Technology and Control Systems Engineering Technology. Tim has taught Automation & Control courses at Sheridan Institute of technology and served on the ISA (International Society of Automation) executive Toronto Section.
Instrumentation and Controls for Building Automation System (BAS)
This presentation is intended for those who work in the industrial & process sectors of the automation technology community interested in learning how their engineering experience and services can be utilized in Building Automation applications.
The demand for BAS engineering skills is growing as buildings become more intelligent and efficient and it is estimated that by 2020 the labour force in what will be a 100 Billion dollar industry will increase by 30% but there will be a shortage of people that can do the job.
Join us on Thursday, March 29 at the Sandman Hotel for dinner and an evening of social networking and learn how your skills and services can be applied in this sector.
Highlights of the BAS talk include an overview of:
- Sensors & Controllers
- Networks
- Software Platforms
Speaker: Prof. Leo SaLemi
Leo has been a long time member of the ISA and currently teaches Building Automation at George Brown College. He is also the current ISA Toronto Section President and the Director of the global ISA Building Automation Division (BASDIV).
